Created in 2015, to address a wide range of global challenges and promote sustainable development, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals known as the UN SDGs address economic, social, and environmental issues as global goals.
This comprehensive framework of 17 goals represents a global consensus on key priorities and creates a common language and set of objectives that all countries and stakeholders can work towards, fostering international cooperation and coordination and a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet. Now and into the future.
While the primary intention of carbon projects is the reduction or avoidance of greenhouse gas emissions, integrating SDGs ensures that the project also contributes to other crucial aspects of sustainable development, such as poverty reduction, health improvements, and biodiversity conservation.
Factoring in SDGs can help identify synergies between carbon reduction and other sustainable development outcomes; projects designed with SDGs in mind are more likely to incorporate adaptive measures that enhance the resilience of communities and ecosystems to the impacts of climate change.
The Invert carbon team considers UN SDGs as benchmarks for program evaluation, ensuring a project not only contributes to meaningful carbon reduction and the preservation of nature, but also ensures the betterment of communities around the world.
Invert’s Mexican IFM carbon removal projects, developed in partnership with The Earth Lab and stewarded by the traditional ejido land owners, tackle an ambitious 7 UN SDG goals.
To end poverty in all its forms, everywhere.
At least 10% of income generated from each project is added to a community social trust that is reinvested into the local community impacted by the carbon project.
To ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all
Through their work with the projects, ejidatarios receive ongoing training and education about sustainable development and mitigation of climate change ensuring equal access for all within the community to affordable and quality technical education.
To achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
The assembly grants ejido rights regardless of the gender of the person. Women & men have equal decision making power, equal rights to economic resources as well as access to ownership and control over land. 283 women are direct participants in these projects.
The ejido’s governance activities are carried out in accordance with the Agrarian Law of Mexico and the internal regulations of the ejidos. This promotes, enforces, and monitors gender equality and attendance in ejido assemblies, summoning men and women members of the assembly without distinction.
Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
These projects create 80 jobs within the communities including surveillance committees, fire control brigades, and roles for monitoring activities, environmental safeguarding, maintenance & project management.
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
These projects directly and indirectly contribute to mitigating the impacts of climate change by removing CO2e during their 100-year lifetime. They will maintain forest cover and increase carbon sequestration by improving the forest management practices within the ejido territories.
Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
Through stewardship by local ejidos, these projects ensure the protection and restoration of the ecosystem while sustainably managing the forest and halting land degradation and biodiversity loss. The three projects work to maintain forest cover and ecosystem connectivity and take significant actions to reduce the degradation of natural habitats and protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species on the IUCN Red List.
Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development
These projects solidify strong partnerships that contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development by mobilizing resources, sharing knowledge, promoting the creation and transfer of environmentally sound technologies. These projects include agreements for additional financial resources mobilized to Mexico, an emerging country.
