Seven of Nine Planet Health Check Boundaries Breached.

The Planetary Health Check 2025 presents a sobering yet vital scientific assessment of Earth’s stability, resilience, and life-support systems. Built upon the Planetary Boundaries framework, the report evaluates the nine processes that keep our planet in a safe operating space for humanity. The 2025 assessment finds that seven of the nine planetary boundaries have now been breached, marking an escalation in planetary instability and signaling growing risks of irreversible change.

Of the nine planetary boundaries, only two remain within safe limits and the remaining seven show signs of mounting stress, deterioration, and feedback effects that risk compounding damage. Here’s what the report found:

#1 Climate Change (High Risk): Heat trapped in the Earth’s system is nearly three times the safe limit, accelerating global warming. Atmospheric CO2​ concentration has reached 423 parts per million (ppm), far surpassing the safe boundary of 350 ppm. The data shows that global warming appears to be accelerating, heightening the risk of triggering irreversible tipping elements like the collapse of polar ice sheets and major ocean circulation shifts.

#2 Ocean acidification (Newly Breached): Oceans are absorbing too much CO₂, lowering their pH and weakening conditions for shell-forming marine life. This chemical shift, driven by the ocean absorbing a large portion of humanity’s excess CO2​, places immense stress on marine ecosystems, from coral reefs to calcifying plankton. The critical aragonite saturation level has dropped below the safe boundary, endangering coral reefs and plankton.

#3 Biosphere Integrity (Severely Breached): This loss of genetic diversity and functional integrity destabilizes ecosystems and weakens the biosphere’s ability to co-regulate the state of the planet. Species extinction rates are now 10 times higher than the safe threshold. Humans use around 30% of all natural plant energy, destabilizing ecosystems and weakening nature’s ability to regulate the planet.

#4 Biogeochemical Flows (High Risk): The industrial fixation of nitrogen and the application of mined phosphorus to cropland both continue to overload land and water bodies with excess nutrients. These pollutants cause widespread eutrophication, triggering oxygen-depleted dead zones in freshwaters and coastal marine systems, with no sign of improvement. 

#5 Freshwater Change (Breached): More than one-fifth (∼22%) of the global ice-free land area is now experiencing significant human-induced disturbances in streamflow and soil moisture, doubling the level of natural, pre-industrial variability. This increasing instability heightens the risks of droughts, floods, and impacts essential terrestrial carbon and ecosystem functions.

#6 Land System Change (Breached): While the pace of loss has slowed in some areas, the widespread degradation and fragmentation of remaining forests compromise their vital roles in climate regulation and biodiversity support. Global forest cover has dropped to 59% of its original extent, well below the safe level of 75%. Forest loss and fragmentation weaken carbon storage and biodiversity. 

#7 Novel Entities (Breached): Synthetic chemicals, plastics, and other man-made substances are accumulating worldwide. Many are released without safety testing, creating long-term risks to ecosystems and human health. The key risk lies in the massive volume and diversity of human-made substances being released without adequate safety testing, resulting in accumulating, long-term environmental risks to the entire Earth system.

8. Atmospheric Aerosols (Safe): Global air quality has improved slightly, thanks to reduced fossil fuel burning. However, air pollution still harms many regions and populations, and uneven aerosol distribution remains a concern. Still, significant regional disparities remain, with many populations continuing to face harmful exposure to particulate pollution. While aerosols currently exert a slight cooling influence on the climate, their uneven distribution and health impacts highlight the importance of continued emission reductions and equitable air-quality improvements worldwide.

#9 Stratospheric Ozone (Safe): This stability reflects the continued success of international action under the Montreal Protocol, which has curbed emissions of ozone-depleting substances. However, ozone levels have not yet returned to pre-1980 values, and the Antarctic ozone hole persists each year. Emerging risks from rocket launches and space debris are now under scientific scrutiny, underscoring the need to safeguard these gains and ensure the ozone layer’s full recovery over the coming decades.

A central theme of the 2025 report is that the planetary boundaries cannot be viewed in isolation. Their transgressions interact, amplifying risks through complex feedback loops and cascades. The report points to the dangerous loss of planetary resilience, noting that natural carbon sinks on land and in the ocean, which have historically absorbed over half of human-induced emissions, are now showing signs of saturation and weakening.

This interconnectedness increases the risk of crossing tipping points, the critical thresholds where a small push can trigger large, often irreversible shifts. For instance, the report highlights how the transgression of the Climate Change boundary could trigger instability in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which in turn could lead to a dieback of the Amazon rainforest –a devastating cascade involving Climate Change, Freshwater Change, Land System Change, and Biosphere Integrity.

The report also connects planetary instability to immediate human impacts with an increase in extreme weather events. It highlights that 2024 was the first calendar year with global temperatures exceeding 1.5°C, leading to unprecedented floods, heatwaves, and storms. Attribution studies confirm that climate change has made many of these disasters hotter and wetter, with impacts often amplified by local Planetary Boundary transgressions such as land degradation and water mismanagement.

The 2025 report concludes that Earth’s overall health now sits at the upper end of the danger zone, edging closer to high-risk territory. Yet the planet’s remarkable resilience still offers a window of opportunity. Returning to a safe operating space remains achievable –if humanity acts swiftly to reduce pressures, restore ecosystems, and realign development with planetary limits.

💡 As the report foreword highlights, “The blue Earth is changing. But together, so can we.” This is both a warning sign and a call to action, which introduces hope and agency. It emphasizes that just as humanity has the power to destabilize planetary systems, it also has the capacity to restore them through cooperation, science, and stewardship. The report repeatedly underscores that we are still within a narrow “window of resilience,” meaning we still have a chance to act. This means aligning global efforts across governments, businesses, and civil society to bring human development back within Earth’s safe operating space. In essence, the statement is a reminder that planetary change is not just an environmental crisis; it’s a shared human challenge. The same collective forces that have driven the planet to this point can also be mobilized to regenerate it. 

💡 Seven of the nine planetary boundaries have now been breached, meaning the global systems that underpin all economic activity are deteriorating. For businesses, this signals a shift from seeing sustainability as a nice-to-have to recognizing it as a prerequisite for operational resilience. Supply chains, infrastructure, and market stability all depend on a functioning biosphere, and companies that continue to externalize environmental costs will increasingly face disrupted resources, rising prices, and physical risks.

💡 The report highlights the need for similar diagnostic tools at the corporate level. Just as the report uses control variables to track planetary health (e.g., CO₂ concentration, freshwater use, nutrient flows), businesses must establish science-based metrics that measure their own contributions to these pressures. The movement toward science-based targets for nature, water, and climate reflects this growing expectation. Transparency, consistent data, and integration of planetary health metrics into financial reporting will become the new standard.
