There are a lot of offset projects out there, and it can be difficult to understand the impact – so we’ve grouped the projects we have chosen into 4 categories to help you understand the impact the project will have. These 4 categories are Avoidance, Reduction, Decades Long Removal and Centuries Long Removal.
Avoiding Greenhouse Gas emissions is exactly what it sounds like—it’s all about not doing something incremental that will result in more emissions above a baseline. When forests are preserved, that’s avoidance. Avoidance projects are essential to the climate fight because they reward and reinforce climate-friendly behaviour, helping build a solid foundation for a healthier planet.
Removal projects can help us all breathe a little easier. How? By pulling already-released Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) out of the atmosphere (yes, that can actually be done). Our planet typically does this through photosynthesis—which means supporting the growth of trees, peat moss, and seagrass are all removal projects. Once carbon is removed from the air, it needs to be stored somewhere—but for how long? For most nature-based projects, the answer is decades. This tends to be accomplished through an agreement to maintain a forest for at least 100 years.
Removal projects can help us all breathe a little easier. How? By pulling already-released Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) out of the atmosphere (yes, that can actually be done). Centuries Long Removal Projects are unique, because they’ve developed a means to store carbon for extremely long periods—centuries, and in some cases even millennia! This is usually accomplished through technological processes like pyrolysis or mineralization, which are basically ways to make carbon solid so that it can be safely stored away.
Reduction might seem like the simplest way to tackle climate change—just emit less GHGs! But it’s not quite that simple. Reducing carbon emissions is all about finding creative ways to keep essential processes running in a cleaner, more efficient way. Reduction projects are measured against baseline GHG emissions—if a technology or process can bring those emissions down, it’s a reduction project.
In order to estimate your carbon footprint, we ask you a series of lifestyle questions focused on the primary sources of carbon emissions in your life, namely, transportation, housing, food consumption, and discretionary spending. The answer to each of these questions is then used to estimate the amount of greenhouse gas emissions your lifestyle produces. Your results are tailored to your location and consider provincial or state factors such as the electricity generation mix, and heating & cooling requirements. Your footprint is then compared to the provincial and state averages so that you understand your personal impact as compared to others.
After your initial footprint estimate is complete, you’ll have established your baseline emissions. As you progress on your climate action journey, daily updates to your habits and behaviors will track your actual footprint and provide an accurate overview of your total emissions on a monthly and annual basis.
Our carbon footprint estimates are completed using first-principles estimation methods following the GHG Protocol, the world’s most widely used greenhouse gas accounting standard, where possible, alongside a variety of data sources including government census data and third-party studies such as the Hot or Cool 1.5-Degree Lifestyles report. As additional estimation methodologies and data sources become available, we will update our calculator accordingly to ensure alignment with best practices in greenhouse gas accounting.
AI Action Advisor.
Still have question? Contact Us.
The AI Action Advisor is a new, conversational feature from Invert that provides you with a personalized experience focused on helping you progress through your climate-action journey.
The AI Action Advisor is fine-tuned from GPT-3.5, a language model trained to produce text. The companion is optimized for dialogue by using Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF), a method that uses human demonstrations and preference comparisons to guide the model toward desired behavior.
In the mobile app, click on the AI icon in the bottom navigation. This will launch the in-app chat screen. On the desktop app, click on the AI icon in the left-hand navigation or on the chat box in the bottom-right corner of the home screen.
Yes, the Invert AI Action Advisor can recommend a variety of activities that will help you lower your carbon footprint, including personalized recommendations based on your preferences and lifestyle.
The AI Action Advisor only knows the information that you share with it and only retains information that is relevant to your climate journey.
The AI Action Advisor summarizes and stores information from previous conversations that allow it to have personalized interactions with the user in future conversations.+
Each AI Action Advisor persona embodies a distinct personality designed to suit the user’s climate knowledge. You can choose to interact with Professor Vert, a climate expert; Indy, A climate enthusiast; Captain Rook, a pirate; or Adoy, a wise alien.
You can change your AI Action Advisor persona in your settings. In the mobile app, click on your Profile icon in the bottom navigation, and then click on the cog icon in the top right-hand corner to access your Settings. From the Account list, choose Select Advisor Persona and choose from the list.
The AI Action Advisor, like other language models, is designed to generate human-like responses based on the input it receives. While it can often produce coherent and contextually relevant answers, its accuracy is not perfect and can vary depending on the specific question or topic. It’s important to note that the AI Action Advisor generates responses based on patterns and information from the training data it was exposed to, and it does not possess real-time knowledge or the ability to fact-check information.
Furthermore, the AI Action Advisor can sometimes produce incorrect or nonsensical answers, and it may generate responses that sound plausible but are actually inaccurate. It’s crucial to verify the information provided by the AI Action Advisor and use critical thinking when evaluating its responses. If accuracy is a high priority, it’s recommended to cross-reference information from multiple reliable sources.
Only Invert Administrators can view your conversations.
