Weather-Related Damages Hit More Than $100B.

The United States has already endured more than $100 billion in weather-related damage by the halfway point of 2025, the highest total ever recorded for the first six months of a year, according to new data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and insurance industry reports.

Between January and June, a series of wildfires, tornado outbreaks, and severe storms resulted in losses of between $93 billion and $126 billion, nearly double the previous record of $57 billion set in 2023. The findings underscore how climate change and rapid development in high-risk regions are driving unprecedented economic impacts.

The most destructive events were the Palisade and Eaton wildfires near Los Angeles, which tore through affluent neighborhoods and are now among the costliest wildfires in U.S. history. Meanwhile, tornado outbreaks in March and May each caused more than $8 billion in insured losses, highlighting the rising toll of extreme convective storms. Although the Atlantic hurricane season had been relatively calm by mid-year, experts warn the total for 2025 could reach $220 billion if major tropical systems strike before year’s end.

Scientists say the trend reflects both the growing intensity of extreme weather fueled by climate change and the so-called “expanding bull’s-eye” effect, where population growth and expensive infrastructure are increasingly concentrated in high-risk zones. Projections suggest that flood losses alone could climb by up to 147% by 2050 in parts of the U.S. if current trends continue. While improvements in forecasting and emergency response have helped limit fatalities, researchers caution that future heat waves and floods could still result in significant loss of life.

The record losses come amid concerns over budget cuts to federal agencies such as FEMA, NOAA, and the U.S. Forest Service, the very organizations tasked with preparing for and responding to disasters. Experts warn that underfunding these agencies could magnify future damages. As the financial cost of climate-related disasters soars, scientists and policymakers alike emphasize that adaptation and resilience measures, like improved warning systems to smarter land-use planning, are now essential to safeguard communities in a warming world.

Looking to Canada, the 2025 extreme weather season has been one of the most destructive and climate-intensified on record. By early August, more than 7.3 million hectares of land had burned, making it one of the largest wildfire seasons in the country’s history and roughly 78% above the five-year average. The Prairie provinces, especially Saskatchewan and Manitoba, were hit hardest, prompting states of emergency and mass evacuations. In Manitoba alone, more than 17,000 residents were forced to flee as flames advanced and thick smoke blanketed regions across the U.S. border. According to scientists from Environment and Climate Change Canada, the heat waves that fueled these fires were made two to ten times more likely by human-caused climate change.

Alongside the fires, Canada endured an intense summer of heat waves. Government analysis found that nine out of ten major heat events in July and August were significantly influenced by global warming. Cities such as Fort Smith, NWT and Calgary, Alberta, recorded temperatures 9–12°C above normal, straining power grids and endangering vulnerable populations. These prolonged heat events also worsened drought conditions, drying out forests and farmlands and heightening the risk of further fires.

Canada also saw a spike in severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, particularly across the Prairies. The Northern Tornadoes Project confirmed multiple tornadoes through the summer, including several powerful storms in Saskatchewan and Alberta. One August hailstorm near Brooks, Alberta, produced golf-ball-sized hail and left a 125-mile path of destruction visible from space. Increasingly severe convective storms, bringing hail, heavy rain, and strong winds, are now among the country’s costliest weather threats.

Meanwhile, forecasters have warned that the Atlantic hurricane season remains active, raising risks for coastal communities along the Atlantic Ocean. This week, Hurricane Melissa, the second strongest hurricane in the Atlantic basin ever, brought widespread destruction and devastation to Jamaica before moving on to Cuba, Haiti, the Bahamas, and Bermuda. Much of the areas hardest hit remain without power and communications networks, and it’s still unclear what the total impact of damage will be and how long it will take for these communities to rebuild vital infrastructure. As Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness points out, “There is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a Category 5, The question now is the speed of recovery. That’s the challenge.” The U.N. said Wednesday that Hurricane Melissa had left “tremendous unprecedented devastation” in Jamaica and called on nations to help support the country in its recovery.

Looking holistically, 2025 has revealed how climate change is reshaping North America’s weather extremes, producing longer wildfire seasons, hotter summers, and more damaging storms. Scientists and policymakers emphasize the urgent need for adaptation and resilience, including better warning systems, land-use planning, and infrastructure designed for a warming world.
