The World Carbon Sink is Being Degraded by Climate Change.

A new report about the world carbon Sink reveals that climate change is severely weakening the planet’s natural systems that help absorb CO2 and the rapid warming of the earth is to blame. In a report titled Low latency carbon budget analysis reveals a large decline of the land carbon sink in 2023, a group of international researchers shared that 2023 brought record high CO2 growth rates that were 86% higher than the previous year and the weakest global net land CO2 sink rate since 2003.

They report that the land’s ability to absorb CO2 dropped to 0.44 billion tonnes of carbon per year (GtC/yr) marking the lowest value since 2003 and coming in far below the average of 2.04 GtC per year recorded from 2010 to 2022. The speed at which the land sinks have declined has even surprised researchers as 2023 brought global temperatures 1.48°C above pre-industrial levels.

The weakening of the earth’s carbon sink is largely attributed to extreme weather events in 2023 including:

  • Severe drought in the Amazon between June and November 2023 leading to an abnormal carbon loss of 0.31 GtC in carbon storage
  • Extreme emissions from wildfires in Canada which saw an estimated 0.58 GtC, more than 6x the average of the last decade
  • Impacts from the record heat waves felt across the globe which saw the 95th percentile of the hottest locations contributing to a significant carbon loss amounting to 1.73 GtC globally
  • The continued decline in the CO2 uptake north of 20°N which has declined by 50% since 2024 and has been further stressed by extreme high temperatures 

One positive highlight is that while the land sinks are weakening, the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon slightly increased in 2023, mainly due to oceanic processes linked to El Niño. It is worth noting that this does not fully offset the dramatic decline in the land sink, underscoring the need for both land and ocean ecosystems to function effectively as climate regulators.

The drastic weakening of the land carbon sink in 2023, even with only a moderate El Niño, raises concerns about the resilience of these natural sinks in the face of ongoing climate change. The report calls for urgent actions to enhance carbon sequestration and cut emissions, warning that natural carbon sinks might fail to mitigate future CO2 emissions if warming continues at current rates​.

This trend reflects a dangerous feedback loop: as climate change intensifies, the systems that normally mitigate warming like forests and wetlands are being compromised, which in turn leads to even more CO2 being released. This suggests that as warming progresses, we could see a breakdown of natural buffers, escalating the rate of climate change​.

The findings underscore the urgent need to enhance carbon sequestration (such as through reforestation and better land management) and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. If extreme warming continues, natural carbon sinks may collapse, leaving humanity without the climate-mitigating services they provide.

The unprecedented impact of extreme heat, drought, and fires on carbon fluxes in 2023 indicates that climate models may not fully capture the effects of such extreme events. These events, driven by climate change, had a much larger impact on carbon sinks than projected, leading to significant CO2 emissions from regions typically considered carbon sinks. This suggests that many models might not account for the intensifying frequency and severity of such events and we may not fully understand longer term impacts of climate change as well as we previously thought.

💡 The record-high increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration in 2023, even with only a modest rise in fossil fuel emissions, points to a weakening of natural carbon sinks. This suggests that the ability of ecosystems to absorb CO2 is being compromised by climate change and the effects of more frequent and intense heat waves and related natural disasters.

💡 This reduction in the land’s ability to store carbon means more CO2 remains in the atmosphere, accelerating global warming. This puts even more pressure on governments and corporate actors to urgently act to ramp up their decarbonization plan and highlights the importance of carbon removal projects.

💡 The report puts a spotlight on the vulnerability of forests to climate-induced stress, such as drought and fire and highlights the immediate action needed to safeguard our planet’s carbon sinks. Carbon markets play a crucial tool for safeguarding our planet by funneling resources and attention to our natural assets while also working to protect and restore the carbon sink.
